{"id":73075,"date":"2018-01-16T10:33:02","date_gmt":"2018-01-16T20:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=73075"},"modified":"2019-03-18T17:12:30","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T03:12:30","slug":"red-clinic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2018\/01\/16\/red-clinic\/","title":{"rendered":"Middle-schoolers and teachers attend <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> research and engineering design clinic"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZDDtEfIwXLA?rel=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Dozens of students and teachers from <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> public middle schools participated in a hands-on engineering and design workshop at the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the Research and Engineering Design Skills Clinic for Students and Teachers (RED) participants were tasked with applying the engineering design\/inquiry process and scientific concepts to solve a mystery on the source of an epidemic, and to build, and then rebuild an aerodynamic whirligig device.<\/p>\n<p>Activities were facilitated by undergraduate students from the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/hawaii.edu\/uh-vip\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Vertically Integrated Projects<\/a> (VIP) program and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa College of Engineering<\/a> graduate students. The engineering school collaborated with <a href=\"http:\/\/stempreacademy.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> Pre-Academy<\/a> to improve the quality of middle school science research and engineering design projects, provide teachers with new approaches for cultivating research and engineering design skills and expose participants to college-level research work.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The team developed the <abbr>RED<\/abbr> Clinic to create opportunities for students and teachers to experience passionate engagement with research and engineering design,&rdquo; said <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/stempreacademy.hawaii.edu\/c-more\">Davin Sasaki<\/a><\/strong>, <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Pre-Academy project manager and research project developer.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees at the October 28, 2017 event included 43 students and teachers from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jarrett Middle School<\/li>\n<li>Kahuku High and Intermediate School<\/li>\n<li>Kailua Intermediate School<\/li>\n<li>King Intermediate School<\/li>\n<li>Stevenson Middle School<\/li>\n<li>Washington Middle School<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Keynote addresses were given by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ee.hawaii.edu\/faculty\/detail.php?usr=62\">Aaron Ohta<\/a><\/strong>, professor of electrical engineering and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/me\/redlab\/members\/\">Reza Ghorbani<\/a><\/strong>, associate professor of mechanical engineering. Both shared aspects of their projects and research, and told stories about the events and circumstances that brought them into the engineering field.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73106\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73106\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/manoa-engineering-workshop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"474\" class=\"size-full wp-image-73106\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/manoa-engineering-workshop.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/manoa-engineering-workshop-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73106\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mechanical engineering student and <abbr>RED<\/abbr> Clinic facilitator Heather Situ offers engineering notebook insights to a student from Kahuku High and Intermediate School.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Geena Wann-Kung, who is currently studying electrical engineering at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa shared the academic path that brought her from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a> through international competitions at <abbr title=\"National Aeronautics and Space Administration\">NASA<\/abbr> facilities and finally to <abbr title=\"College of Engineering\">COE<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>For many, the highlight of the day was attending the Student Research Project Showcase. Participants divided into teams and visited two of four <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa engineering and research labs to learn about projects and research conducted by engineering undergraduate and graduate students.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, all agreed that it was the interaction between <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa faculty and students, <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Pre-Academy staff and interns, and the middle school students and teachers that provided the greatest rewards and insight into the state of engineering and possibilities for the future.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was the first time that I had seen these kids, many of them who barely speak in class, really unwind and start to interact with their peers-even from other schools,&rdquo; said Jason Akamine, an eighth grade science teacher at Washington Middle School.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The activities truly showed the possibilities of using the engineering design process and project-based activities in the classroom.
