He will be responsible for the definition, planning and execution of <abbr>ESA<\/abbr>&#8216;s science program, which includes working with member countries and international partners like the United States. He will be missed.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Lasting changes to <abbr>IfA<\/abbr>\u2019s education and outreach programs were made under G\u00fcnther\u2019s leadership,&rdquo; added <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President and Interim M\u0101noa Chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/leadership\/david-lassner\/\"><strong>David Lassner<\/strong><\/a>. &ldquo;<abbr>IfA<\/abbr> and the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa College of Natural Sciences greatly expanded undergraduate education opportunities with a new <abbr title=\"bachelor of arts\">BA<\/abbr> in astronomy and a <abbr title=\"bachelor of science\">BS<\/abbr> in astrophysics.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>During his tenure, Hasinger oversaw many significant advances at <abbr>IfA<\/abbr>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifa.hawaii.edu\/research\/Pan-STARRS.shtml\"><abbr title=\"Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System\">Pan-STARRS<\/abbr>1 telescope<\/a> on Haleakal\u0101 came into full operation on Maui, producing the world\u2019s foremost sky survey and becoming the world leader in the detection of asteroids, comets and near-Earth objects. The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, also on Haleakal\u0101, drew close to completion during his tenure. Hasinger also helped shepherd the transfer to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> of the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope and James Clerk Maxwell Telescope on Maunakea. <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> also worked with the Maunakea observatory community to significantly expand public outreach, including partnering in the development of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cfht.hawaii.edu\/en\/news\/MaunakeaScholars\/\">Maunakea Scholars program<\/a>. <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> now organizes more than 200 events annually, reaching 25,000 people on multiple islands across the state.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> will name an interim director for
