{"id":71661,"date":"2017-12-04T11:42:42","date_gmt":"2017-12-04T21:42:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=71661"},"modified":"2019-03-27T14:41:01","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T00:41:01","slug":"caltech-seeks-public-input-on-decommissioning-of-its-maunakea-telescope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/12\/04\/caltech-seeks-public-input-on-decommissioning-of-its-maunakea-telescope\/","title":{"rendered":"Caltech seeks public input on decommissioning of its Maunakea telescope"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CoBJm5xWRRs?rel=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Caltech announced December 4, 2017 that it is proceeding to decommission the <a href=\"http:\/\/cso.caltech.edu\/\">Caltech Submillimeter Observatory<\/a> (CSO) on Maunakea on the island of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CSO<\/abbr> is the first telescope to be removed from Maunakea under the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.malamamaunakea.org\/uploads\/management\/plans\/CMP_DecommissioningPlan_2010.pdf\">Decommissioning Plan for Maunakea Observatories<\/a> (<small><abbr>PDF<\/abbr><\/small>), a sub-plan of the Maunakea Comprehensive Management Plan.<\/p>\n<p>In a news release from Pasadena, California, officials at Caltech said the next steps in the decommissioning process are an environmental assessment (EA) and a conservation district use application (CDUA).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.malamamaunakea.org\/\">Office of Maunakea Management<\/a> (<abbr>OMKM<\/abbr>), part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a>, will coordinate the process.<\/p>\n<p>Caltech said that as part of the <abbr>EA<\/abbr>, it is preparing plans that include scenarios for dismantling the observatory, removing it and restoring the site where it now sits. Caltech said it will abide by terms outlined in its sublease with the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and its decommissioning plan.<\/p>\n<p>The community can comment on the removal and site restoration until January 15, 2018. The community is encouraged to submit comments to Peter Young of <span aria-label=\"Hookuleana\">Ho&#699;okuleana<\/span> LLC (<a href=\"mailto:PeterYoung@Hookuleana.com\">PeterYoung@Hookuleana.com<\/a>) by January 15, 2018.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71660\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71660\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/cso-exterior.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-71660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/cso-exterior.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/cso-exterior-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71660\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Caltech Submillimeter Observatory<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once drafts of the <abbr>EA<\/abbr> and <abbr>CDUA<\/abbr> are released the public will have additional opportunities to comment.<\/p>\n<p>According to Caltech, once the <abbr>EA<\/abbr> process is finished, a <abbr>CDUA<\/abbr> will be filed with the State Department of Land and Natural Resources.
