Photo by: Jamie Gibson-Barrows.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In continuing efforts to &ldquo;audio describe the world,&rdquo; researchers at the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> took part in a project that brought 26 blind and visually impaired people to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yose\/index.htm\">Yosemite National Park<\/a> for user testing of the UniD mobile app. <\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/profile\/index.cfm?email=brett.oppegaard@hawaii.edu\"><strong>Brett Oppegaard<\/strong><\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.communications.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Communications<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> is the principal investigator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unidescription.org\/\">UniDescription<\/a> project. <\/p>\n<p>The group tested the new audio description of Yosemite\u2019s brochure featured in the app. The research-instrument app is designed to make brochures at national parks accessible to those who have trouble seeing them.<\/p>\n<p>The effort was coordinated with the California Council of the Blind\u2019s Fresno chapter, the national <a href=\"http:\/\/acb.org\/\">American Council of the Blind<\/a> organization and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yose\/index.htm\">Yosemite National Park<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h2>More about the UniDescription Project<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71537\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/manoa-communications-unidescription-app-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"355\" class=\"size-full wp-image-71537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/manoa-communications-unidescription-app-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/manoa-communications-unidescription-app-2-254x300.jpg 254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Martha Espitia, Nikki Richards and Sarah Harris testing the UniD mobile app in Yosemite. Photo by: Jamie Gibson-Barrows.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The UniD app (available for both <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/kHia7t\">iOs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/L3Y3wn\">Android<\/a>) contains audio description of more than 50 National Park Service brochures so far, including those for Everglades National Park, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Volcanoes National Park, the Statue of Liberty National Monument, Yellowstone National Park and the Washington Monument.<\/p>\n<p>The research team, led by Oppegaard and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cds.hawaii.edu\/pages\/disability-and-diversity-studies-faculty-university-hawaii-manoa\"><strong>Megan Conway<\/strong> and <strong>Thomas Conway<\/strong><\/a> from  <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cds.hawaii.edu\">Center on Disability Studies<\/a>, started the UniDescription project in the fall of 2014 as a way to improve and encourage better audio description.
