Only the top 15 percent of players compete in this category.<\/p>\n<p>NCL provides a cybersecurity training ground in a game-like environment that requires participants to work individually in regular season and in teams during postseason games. The competition is designed for participants to solve real problems, with actual deadlines, under enormous time, technical and resource constraints.<\/p>\n<h2>West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> team has proven competition track record<\/h2>\n<p>The 10-student team faced off against other teams from across the United States, which included undergraduate and graduate students and cyber security professionals. The team consisted of members of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Advanced Technology Society (HATS), a student organization with an enviable competition track record competing in the <abbr>NCL<\/abbr> competition. This year\u2019s competitors were <strong>Bryan Tanaka<\/strong>, <strong>Tim Gunderson<\/strong>, <strong>Catherine Sarte<\/strong>, <strong>Gabriel Farinas<\/strong>, <strong>Marvin Arnold Buenafe<\/strong>, <strong>Taylor Kina<\/strong>, <strong>Justin Cobbs<\/strong>, <strong>Kimberly Matsumoto<\/strong>, <strong>Robert Kuakini<\/strong> and <strong>Christopher-Joshua Ulep<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A second <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> team finished 25th overall nationally.<\/p>\n<p>The team competed in nine categories, coming in first nationally in four:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Network traffic analysis.<\/li>\n<li>Wireless exploitation.<\/li>\n<li>Enumeration and exploitation.<\/li>\n<li>Password cracking (the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> team was the only one to crack 100 percent of passwords).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Our students never cease to amaze me, not only in terms of their technical expertise, but their dedication and work ethic that make them the best in the nation,&rdquo; said Matthew A.
