The project celebrates the 30th anniversary of Ka Papahana Kaiapuni (Hawaiian immersion schools in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>). The campaign encompasses designing and creating ten Living Legacy Murals inspired by the <span aria-label=\"moolelo\">mo&#699;olelo<\/span> (story) of Kalapana.<\/p>\n<p>The Hilo mural, located at 51 <span aria-label=\"Makaala\">Maka&#699;ala<\/span> Street, is sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/catalog\/khuok-college-of-hawaiian-language-undergrad.php\">Ka Haka <span aria-label=\"ula\">&#699;Ula<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Keelik\u014dlani\">Ke&#699;elik\u014dlani<\/span> College of Hawaiian Language<\/a> at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo, Kamehameha Schools, and the state Department of Education <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/TeachingAndLearning\/StudentLearning\/HawaiianEducation\/Pages\/home.aspx\">Office of Hawaiian Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The project&#8217;s goal is to use art as a medium to invigorate Native Hawaiian identity and perpetuate Hawaiian values, language and culture, while raising awareness of the 23 Hawaiian language immersion and charter schools that form Ka Papahana Kaiapuni,&rdquo; says <strong>Kamalani Johnson<\/strong>, lecturer at the college and the mural project&#8217;s Hawaiian language director.<\/p>\n<p>The Hilo mural was created by teachers, students and <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> (family) from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaumeke.org\/\">Ka <span aria-label=\"umeke\">&#699;Umeke<\/span> <span aria-label=\"K\u0101eo\">K\u0101&#699;eo<\/span><\/a> (a pre-K12 Hawaiian immersion school), along with Hawaiian language students from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo and the Hawaiian medium laboratory school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nawahi.org\/\">Ke Kula <span aria-label=\"o\">&#699;o<\/span> <span aria-label=\"N\u0101wah\u012bokalani\u014dpuu\">N\u0101wah\u012bokalani&#699;\u014dpu&#699;u<\/span><\/a> (a lab public charter school) in <span aria-label=\"keaau\">Kea&#699;au<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The mural project is being led by a collective of artists and supporters called <span aria-label=\"auna\">&#699;\u0100una<\/span> P\u0101heona headed by graffiti artist John Prime Hina. They have been traveling the state since August. The group is engaging local artists and Hawaiian immersion schools to design and create the murals, which are being painted one at a time culminating on May 25, 2018, in Hanap\u0113p\u0113, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The Ka Papahana Kaiapuni celebration coincides with the 20th anniversary of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo&#8217;s Hawaiian language college.
