School children of all ages, families and community members are invited to attend the <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> Open House at the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a>, October 20, 8:30 a.m.&#8211;2 p.m. and 21, 10 a.m.&#8211;2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa faculty, staff and students, organizations such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokulea.com\/\">Polynesian Voyaging Society<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waikikiaquarium.org\/\">Waik\u012bk\u012b Aquarium<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a> will be participating.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/soest-openhouse.jpg\" alt=\"kids at science display\" width=\"400\" height=\"297\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-20577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/soest-openhouse.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/soest-openhouse-260x193.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nearly 90 different exhibits will be offered, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Make-a-quake<\/strong>&#8212;Make a real earthquake in a model of the Pacific region.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Explosive eruptions<\/strong>&#8212;Safe demonstration of an explosive eruption fueled by dry ice. In less than 1 second, an explosion will carry 20 gallons of water into a 10-meter-high eruption column.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Life and times of the humpback whales<\/strong>&#8212;how big is a humpback whale? How do they feed?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Surf&#8217;s up<\/strong>&#8212;What causes waves? And how do you measure waves?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Create a hurricane<\/strong>&#8212;Create ideal hurricane conditions by changing the winds, latitude, moisture, and sea temperature in an interactive online game.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Polynesian Voyaging Society: M\u0101lama Honua<\/strong>&#8212;crew members and other volunteers share activities and knowledge with the attendees. Learn about the science at sea and celestial navigation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Journey to the deep sea<\/strong>&#8212;Dive to the deepest, coldest depths and see animals from different deep-sea habitats including whale and wood falls, Antarctica and the abyssal Pacific Ocean. Learn how scientists collect these animals and what makes them unique.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More than 7,700 people attended the last <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> Open House held in 2015.
