  {"id":6905,"date":"2012-05-25T16:46:11","date_gmt":"2012-05-26T02:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=6905"},"modified":"2021-04-14T10:00:29","modified_gmt":"2021-04-14T20:00:29","slug":"forensic-anthropology-partnership-established","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/05\/25\/forensic-anthropology-partnership-established\/","title":{"rendered":"Forensic anthropology partnership established"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_6908\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6908\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/jpac-cil-group.jpg\" alt=\"Large group of people\" width=\"620\" height=\"362\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6908\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/jpac-cil-group.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/jpac-cil-group-260x151.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Representatives from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, Leeward Community College and the Joint Prisoners of War\/Missing in Action Accounting Command Central Identification Lab at Hickam Air Force Base following the agreement signing ceremony.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students and faculty in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westoahu.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> and Leeward Community College&#8217;s certificate program in applied forensics anthropology will benefit from a new partnership between the two campuses and the Joint Prisoners of War\/Missing in Action Accounting Command at Hickam Air Force Base.<\/p>\n<p>The three institutions recently signed a memorandum of understanding that expands <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8217;s current partnership with the Joint <abbr title=\"Prisoners of War\">POW<\/abbr>\/<abbr title=\"Missing in Action\">MIA<\/abbr> Accounting Command Central Identification Lab.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership provides forensic anthropology students with opportunities to learn in a field and laboratory environment at the Central Identification Lab, the most prestigious forensic anthropology lab in the nation. The lab&#8217;s primary mission is to search for, recover and identify U.S. personnel missing from past military conflicts. Teams from the lab have traveled to Cambodia, Vietnam, North Korea, South Korea, Iraq, the Pentagon after the September 11 terrorist attacks, and all over the world conducting recovery missions.<\/p>\n<p>Instructors from the Central Identification Lab will teach forensic anthropology courses at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, and students and faculty are now able to attend classes and receive training at the lab&#8217;s Forensic Science Academy at Hickam Air Force Base.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and Leeward Community College faculty members will also be listed as adjunct faculty at Hickam, and Hickam staff will utilize <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and Leeward Community College campuses for research and training.<\/p>\n<h2>Applied forensic anthropology certificate<\/h2>\n<p>The certificate program in applied forensic anthropology is offered jointly by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and Leeward Community College through in-class instruction, and is awarded by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> upon completion.<\/p>\n<p>When combined with appropriate associate and bachelor&#8217;s degrees, the certificate prepares students for a variety of job opportunities, including crime scene analyst, forensic anthropologist, forensic scientist, and crime lab technician.
