When Filipinos rap they rap with purpose and style. This talk will feature Prometheus Brown, also known as Geologic of the Blue Scholars, and Bambu, solo artist and formerly of Native Guns, who also make up the rap duo, The Bar.<\/p>\n<h2><em>Family Ingredients<\/em> screening and panel discussion<\/h2>\n<p>Thursday, October 12, 5&#8211;7 p.m., Campus Center 308<\/p>\n<p>The cast and crew of <abbr title=\"Public Broadcasting Service\">PBS<\/abbr>&#8217;s Emmy Award-winning series <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/show\/family-ingredients\/\"><em>Family Ingredients<\/em><\/a> will be on campus to screen an episode for their upcoming second season. After the showing, they will discuss the importance of food and cultural heritage with Seattle-based bakeshop owners, Chera Amlag and Prometheus Brown.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68302\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68302\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/manoa-filipinomonth-kenny.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-full wp-image-68302\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Family Ingredients<\/em> cast members<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>About the cast:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ty Sanga is a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa ethnic studies graduate. His latest feature documentary, <em>Visions in the Dark: The Life of Pinky Thompson<\/em>, premiered at the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> International Film Festival and will air on <abbr title=\"Public Broadcasting Service\">PBS<\/abbr> in 2017.<\/li>\n<li>Ed Kenney, a successful restaurateur, owns and runs four restaurants&#8212;Town, Kaimuki Superette, Mud Hen Water and the recently opened Mahina and Sun&#8217;s. His restaurants are lively gathering places guided by the mantra, &ldquo;local first, organic whenever possible, with aloha always.&rdquo;<\/li>\n<li>Sheldon Simeon, a Hilo native, owns and operates Tin Roof in Maui, serving island residents and tourists alike with a unique take on classic <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> food.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Filipino food movement<\/h2>\n<p>Friday, October 13, 2:30&#8211;4 p.m., Hamilton 301<\/p>\n<p>Food is central to understanding and practicing one\u2019s ethnicity.
