Kumu hula, artists and scholars paid tribute to the Queen with special performances of mele, hula and <span aria-label=\"hai\">ha&#699;i<\/span> <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;\u014dlelo<\/span> at <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/tickets-available-now-for-remembering-her-majesty\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hoohalialia\">Ho&#699;oh\u0101li&#699;ali&#699;a<\/span>: Remembering Her Majesty<\/a>. <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span> died on November 11, 1917. <\/p>\n<p>The event was part of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui\u0101kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge\u2019s centennial celebration honoring the Queen and centered around four of the her greatest attributes&#8212;m\u0101kaukau (ability), <span aria-label=\"noeau\">no&#699;eau<\/span> (grace and talent), k\u016b i ka pono (ethics) and <span aria-label=\"wiwoole\">wiwo&#699;ole<\/span> (courage). The goal of the concert, and an accompanying extensive exhibit at Hamilton Library, was to celebrate the <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span>\u2019s life and legacy and introduce the Queen, and her creative genius, to those who may not be familiar with her story.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;One thing that we did get from attendees is that they thought they knew about the Queen, but they learned so much more in a gentle and gracious way,&rdquo; said event organizer and <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui\u0101kea<\/span> Interim Dean <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/people\/jonathan-osorio\/\"><strong>Jon Osorio<\/strong><\/a>. &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span> sacrificed herself in order to protect her people from being killed in a confrontation with the U.S., and also followed a tactic of depending on law and the practices of nation in order to protect our ability to advocate for our sovereignty in the future.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/manoa-hoohalialia-concert.jpg\" alt=\"Band performing on the Kennedy Theatre lanai\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-68156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/manoa-hoohalialia-concert.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/manoa-hoohalialia-concert-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Performers included Manu Boyd and H\u0101lau O ke <span aria-label=\"Aalii\">&#699;A&#699;ali&#699;i<\/span> K\u016b Makani; Nola N\u0101hulu and the Honolulu Youth Opera Chorus: The Cantilena and Gioventu Musicale Ensembles; the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Hawaiian Chorus; the Kawaiolaonap\u016bkanileo Vocal Ensemble; H\u0101lau ka L\u0101 <span aria-label=\"Onohi\">&#699;\u014cnohi<\/span> Mai o <span aria-label=\"Haehae\">Ha&#699;eha&#699;e<\/span>; and Vicky Holt Takamine and H\u0101lau Pua <span aria-label=\"Alii\">Ali&#699;i<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Ilima\">&#699;Ilima<\/span>. All proceeds will fund scholarships for Native Hawaiian students attending <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;All that we produced for Saturday\u2019s concert came from volunteers and donors, but it was also the complete professionalism of our staff, partners in other <abbr>UH<\/abbr> departments and outside entities such as the state Archives, who gave fully of themselves,&rdquo; said Osorio. &ldquo;This is why it was as good as it was.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The musical gathering capped an ongoing exhibit at Hamilton Library, free and open to the public since early September, that runs through October 15.
