The discriminatory events surrounding the infamous Thalia Massie case influenced the new state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and indelibly changed <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> politics. <em>Massie\/Kahahawai<\/em> is based on court records, newspaper articles and witness testimony. The play runs October 20&#8211;28.<\/p>\n<p><em>Massie\/Kahahawai<\/em>\u00a0is directed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/people\/Taurie_Kinoshita\/\">Taurie Kinoshita<\/a><\/strong> and performed by Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> Theatre 260 students&#8212;<strong>Cassidy Patmont<\/strong>, <strong>Chase Jusseaume<\/strong>, <strong>Chivalry Butler<\/strong>, <strong>Darla Richards<\/strong>, <strong>Johnathon Young<\/strong>, <strong>Jessica Jusseaume<\/strong>, <strong>Kelly Segal<\/strong>, <strong>Likeke Nakachi-Isaacs<\/strong>, <strong>Micah Souza<\/strong>, <strong>Michael Wall<\/strong>, <strong>Mikie Davidson<\/strong>, <strong>Noah Schuetz<\/strong> and <strong>Spencer McCarrey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Massie case<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66863\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66863\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/windward-paliku-massie-kahahawai-300.jpg\" alt=\"cast members dressed in costume\" width=\"350\" height=\"498\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66863\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/windward-paliku-massie-kahahawai-300.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/windward-paliku-massie-kahahawai-300-211x300.jpg 211w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66863\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cassidy Patmont and Chase Jusseaume\u00a0in <em>Massie\/Kahahawai<\/em> at Palik\u016b Theatre<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1931, Massie, the privileged wife of a Naval officer, accused five locals of raping her.\u00a0Although witnesses saw her being followed by a white man, two Hawaiians and three other locals were arrested. The five defendants, who had been in a documented traffic accident at the time of the alleged incident, were arrested, put on trial, defamed publicly and had their names and private addresses printed in Honolulu newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>After the ensuing mistrial, one of the defendants, Joseph Kahahawai, was kidnapped and killed.
