1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_66739\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66739\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/westoahu-sustainability-miles-grant.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"404\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/westoahu-sustainability-miles-grant.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/westoahu-sustainability-miles-grant-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> sustainablec community food systems students working in the field.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With a $406,874\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nifa.usda.gov\/funding-opportunity\/alaska-native-serving-and-native-hawaiian-serving-institutions-education\">United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)\u00a0grant<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8217;s<\/a> <strong>Albie Miles<\/strong> will measure the rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/topics\/food-nutrition-assistance\/food-security-in-the-us\/definitions-of-food-security\/\">food insecurity<\/a> in the student population across the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> System and expand the outreach and education capacity of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees-and-certificates\/bachelor-of-applied-sciences\/food-systems\/\">sustainable community food systems\u00a0program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The research project was highlighted by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/leadership\/david-lassner\/\">David Lassner<\/a><\/strong> in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cATXxG0FukA&#038;feature=youtu.be&#038;t=7m10s\">September 20\u00a0presentation<\/a>\u00a0to the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Board of Regents. &ldquo;When we talk about food security for students, we&#8217;re not talking about whether or not we have food for a month in the islands in the case of a hurricane, but rather our hungry students,&rdquo;
