The past, present and future of Kanaka ʻ\u014ciwi (Native Hawaiian) research was highlighted at the inaugural L\u0101hui Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Research Center<\/a> (LHRC) student conference held at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a>. On September 22 and 23, LHRC<\/abbr>—part of the federal Title III<\/abbr> Kekaulike Grant administered by Native Hawaiian Student Services<\/a> at UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and Hawaiian studies faculty at UH<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a>—hosted more than 40 Kanaka ʻ\u014ciwi undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and community presenters who shared the latest research on a broad variety of topics that ranged across more than a dozen disciplines.<\/p>\n

Sessions included: Huli ka Lima i Lalo Mai Uka i Kai: Reconnecting and Restoring ʻIke Through ʻ\u0100ina, Mana Wahine: Avenues for Empowerment, E Hoʻi<\/span> i ka Piko: Healing Through Indigenous Knowledge, Nana i ke kumu: ʻIke Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> in libraries and archives and much more. An authors panel that included three recently published Kanaka ʻ\u014ciwi scholars Noenoe Silva<\/a><\/strong> (political science), Brandy N\u0101lani McDougall<\/a><\/strong> (English) and Renee Pualani Louis<\/strong> (geography) inspired students to think of how their research and writing can make a difference in the community.<\/p>\n

The primary constituency of LHRC<\/abbr> is undergraduate haum\u0101na kanaka ʻ\u014diwi (Native Hawaiian students) and a central goal of the conference was to provide them guidance, training and mentorship so that they are better equipped, more confident and better prepared for careers in research and their respective disciplines.<\/p>\n

The 2nd Annual L\u0101hui Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Research Center student conference will take place at UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in April 2018. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
