  {"id":6608,"date":"2012-05-17T15:58:32","date_gmt":"2012-05-18T01:58:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=6608"},"modified":"2021-04-15T11:29:13","modified_gmt":"2021-04-15T21:29:13","slug":"hawaiian-studies-associate-degree-established","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/05\/17\/hawaiian-studies-associate-degree-established\/","title":{"rendered":"Hawaiian studies associate degree established"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_6617\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6617\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/pounding-poi.jpg\" alt=\"A hand pounding taro into poi\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/pounding-poi.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/pounding-poi-260x195.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6617\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A new associate degree in Hawaiian studies will offer a curriculum focused on Hawaiian culture and knowledge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A new associate in arts degree in Hawaiian studies to be offered by the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s seven <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\">community colleges<\/a> received unanimous approval as a provisional degree by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/bor\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Board of Regents<\/a> at its monthly meeting held May 17.<\/p>\n<p>The degree was collaboratively developed by the community college campuses as an option to prepare students to transfer to a Hawaiian studies baccalaureate degree path at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manoa.hawaii.edu\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hilo.hawaii.edu\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It also provides students with the option to earn an associate degree that provides the qualifications that would be beneficial in the workforce or or other areas of study where a knowledge of the host culture are desired.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;One of the things we see at the community colleges is that not everyone comes to us intending to transfer to a <abbr>BA<\/abbr> program,&rdquo; said <strong>Keala Losch<\/strong>, assistant professor at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a>. &ldquo;For these students, they will now have an opportunity to follow a path of Hawaiian knowledge that, once they graduate, will allow them to take that knowledge into the workforce and back to their communities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>All of the colleges currently offer well-established and diverse Hawaiian studies courses based on the expertise of its faculty and existing academic subject certificate programs in Hawaiian studies.<\/p>\n<p>Establishing the associate degree program is also one way of preserving the Hawaiian culture, values and language, according to Losch.<\/p>\n<p>The degree proposal grew out of a desire to strengthen the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s goal of being a leading indigenous-serving institution and to support the advancement of Hawaiian culture and knowledge.
