  {"id":6510,"date":"2012-05-18T08:54:10","date_gmt":"2012-05-18T18:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=6510"},"modified":"2021-04-15T11:02:20","modified_gmt":"2021-04-15T21:02:20","slug":"model-home-program-builds-45th-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/05\/18\/model-home-program-builds-45th-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Model Home Program builds 45th home"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_6702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6702\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/modelhome1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"347\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6702\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/modelhome1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/modelhome1-260x145.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College students built a three-bedroom, two-bath home for a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island family.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Under a partnership between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiianhomelands.org\/\">Department of Hawaiian Home Lands<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College<\/a>, a home built by students in the college&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.hawaii.edu\/modelhome\/\">Model Home Program<\/a> was dedicated this month in the Hawaiian homestead community of Keaukaha on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island.<\/p>\n<p>Students in the program turned over the keys to a three-bedroom, two-bath home that they built for the department at a cost to the future homeowner of $199,935.<\/p>\n<p>Hawaiian Home Lands beneficiary Denice <span aria-label=\"Keliikoa\">Keli&#699;ikoa<\/span> is the prospective homeowner for the home. She has been on the Hawaiian homes waiting list since January 1986.<\/p>\n<p>A traditional Hawaiian ceremony called <em>moku ka piko<\/em>, meaning the cutting of the umbilical cord, was performed to initiate the new home. The symbolic <em>piko<\/em> was made of plant materials gathered by <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College students and woven together, with each plant possessing a specific reason for its use.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s model home comes equipped with a solar water heater system and a 4KW photovoltaic system. Many other green features were incorporated, including Energy Star qualified appliances, Energy Star metal roofing and radiant barrier sheathing, low <abbr>VOC<\/abbr> paints, <abbr>CFL<\/abbr> lighting and native plant landscaping.<\/p>\n<p>Watch a video of the dedication event covered by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigislandvideonews.com\/2012\/05\/11\/video-45th-model-dhhl-home-dedicated-in-keaukaha\/\"><em>Big Island Video News<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College Model Home Program<\/h2>\n<p>The model home program provides vocational technical students an opportunity to obtain job skills through the construction of a house that is sold to a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> family as an affordable home.<\/p>\n<p>This is the 45th home to be built under this program, which began in 1965. Since its inception, over 3,630 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College drafting, carpentry, electrical, agriculture, welding and diesel students have participated in the program and gained on-the-job experience in home construction.<\/p>\n<p>The model home program was initiated as part of the instructional program at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College. The Architectural, Engineering and CAD Technologies program designs the home and the Carpentry program carries out the basic construction.<\/p>\n<p>The Agriculture program designs and furnishes the minimal, low maintenance landscape and maintains the grounds until the home is accepted by the prospective owner.<\/p>\n<p>The Machine, Welding and Industrial Mechanics Technologies program provides equipment and labor to lift and install the pre-trusses.
