Ivica Zalud<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Ivica Zalud<\/a><\/strong>, has been named 2017 Physician of the Year\u00a0by the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Medical Association<\/a> (HMA). Zalud is the chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health<\/a> at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Zalud will receive the honor on October 7\u00a0at the\u00a02017 Ola Pono Ike\u00a0banquet<\/a> at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.<\/p>\n

Under Zalud’s leadership, several members of the department have invested their own assets to support the training of future specialists in women’s health. Gifts to OB-GYN<\/abbr> have exceeded $8 million, including $6 million by Professor Emeritus Thomas Kosasa<\/a><\/strong>, who has said the quality of care provided by doctors trained by the School of Medicine inspired him.<\/p>\n

In September, Zalud will the first physician in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> to be named a fellow of the American Gynecologic and Obstetrical Society<\/a>. He\u00a0is also currently serving a four-year term as a vice president of the World Association of Perinatal Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“OB-GYN<\/abbr> is a department on the move—and moving all in the right direction,” said Jerris Hedges<\/a><\/strong>, dean of Medicine. “We couldn’t be more pleased that HMA<\/abbr> is recognizing Dr. Zalud’s role as a Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> healthcare leader.”<\/p>\n

JABSOM<\/abbr> OB-GYN<\/abbr> plays a major role in health care statewide, because its faculty are involved in the deliveries of one third of the babies born in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> every year, many of them high risk births, and many born to families unable to pay for the service.<\/p>\n
