Inouye died in December 2012 at the age of 88.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/07\/02\/uh-manoa-preserves-senator-inouyes-legacy\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa preserves Senator Inouye\u2019s legacy<\/a>, July 2, 2013<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;These papers reflect the broad range of areas that his work entailed on behalf of the state,&rdquo; said Inouye\u2019s widow Irene at an August 2017 signing ceremony. &ldquo;I hope that people, including students, will learn about Dan the person, and Dan\u2019s life in public service, so it will inspire others to think about public service as a pathway for them.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64443\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64443\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/manoa-inouye-papers-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/manoa-inouye-papers-2-260x142.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"142\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-64443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/manoa-inouye-papers-2-260x142.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/manoa-inouye-papers-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64443\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Irene Inouye, right, at the signing ceremony<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/library.manoa.Hawai\u02bbi.edu\/departments\/archives\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Library Archives and Manuscripts Department<\/a> is also working to make portions of the Inouye papers accessible at the Library of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This project really demonstrates how the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> preserves knowledge,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Interim Chancellor <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>. &ldquo;We use this great resource of the Inouye papers to gain new insights, create new knowledge, and then all of this is shared with the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, the nation and the world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A Japanese language Bible, which was found in one of the boxes by the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> library staff, was returned to the Inouye family at the signing ceremony. This is a great legacy piece for my daughter, Maggie. She\u2019s only seven, but, as she gets older, she\u2019ll understand that this has come full circle.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Inouye was a M\u0101noa graduate and strong <abbr>UH<\/abbr> supporter. He helped steer millions of dollars to the university for projects such as the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/cmore.soest.hawaii.edu\/news\/\">Center for Microbial Oceanography<\/a>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Pharmacy<\/a>, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College\u2019s Technology Center and the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College Allied Health Center. Fong, U.S. Representative Thomas P. Gill, U.S. Senator Spark M. Matsunaga, U.S. Representative Ed Case and U.S. Representative Patricia F.
