The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa’s Lyon Arboretum<\/a> is holding classes this summer to promote different aspects of Hawaiian culture. Visitors can come and learn from expert craftsmen and talented artist who have dedicated years to their work.<\/p>\n

June classes<\/h2>\n

All About Turmeric<\/strong>
\nInstructor—Cassandra de Kramer
\nDate and Time—Saturday June 23, 9:30 a.m.–11:30 p.m.

\nCost—$25<\/p>\n

Turmeric, known as ʻōlena<\/span> in the Hawaiian culture, has also been used as a flavorful addition in Southern Asia and Middle Eastern cuisines. Cassandra de Kramer will demonstrate several delicious recipes as she discusses the benefits of using turmeric in everyday cooking. She’ll also discuss the propagation and growth of turmeric, harvesting, storing and drying the root. Each student will receive a turmeric root, turmeric powder and a recipe booklet, and sample de Kramer’s delicious turmeric dishes.<\/p>\n

Ipu (Gourd) Decoration<\/strong>
\nInstructor—Tamsen Fox
\nDate and Time—Saturday June 30 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

\nCost—$50<\/p>\n

Learn how to wood burn, etch, dye and other decorative techniques on ipu. Tamsen Fox, a skilled gourd artist will share some of the methods she uses to create beautiful decorative gourds. Gourds, materials and supplies are included in the cost of the class. Bring a lunch and wear clothing that you can work in.<\/p>\n
