Howard Urabe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> awarded posthumous degrees to seven <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/armyrotc\/\">Reserve Officer Training Corps<\/a> cadets who were killed in action during World War <abbr>II<\/abbr> while serving with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The degrees were presented to the next-of-kin of these fallen warriors during the <abbr>ROTC<\/abbr> Spring 2012 Commissioning Ceremony on May 14.<\/p>\n<p>The honorees<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Daniel Betsui<\/strong> (Hanap&#275;p&#275;, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jenhatsu Chinen<\/strong> (Helemano, <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Robert Murata<\/strong> (Honolulu, <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grover Nagaji<\/strong> (Honolulu, <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Akio Nishikawa<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Paia\">P&#257;&#699;ia<\/span>, Maui)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hiroichi Tomita<\/strong> (Wailuku, Maui)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Howard Urabe<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Kapaa\">Kapa&#699;a<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The formation of the Varsity Victory Volunteers<\/h2>\n<p>The seven were students and <abbr>ROTC<\/abbr> cadets enrolled at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa on December 7, 1941, when Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan. In the hours following the bombing, all <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>ROTC<\/abbr> cadets were told to report to duty, forming the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Territorial Guard, which was assigned to guard military installations on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>. A month later, members who were of Japanese ancestry were expelled from the <abbr>HTG<\/abbr> because of their ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p>The students petitioned Delos Emmons, the military governor of the Territory of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, and were allowed to form a civilian labor battalion that became known as the Varsity Victory Volunteers. The <abbr>VVV<\/abbr> dug ditches, built roads and military installations, strung barbed wire and broke rocks at Kolekole quarry<\/p>\n<p>This past February, at an event sponsored by the Go For Broke National Education Center to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the formation of the <abbr>VVV<\/abbr>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Chancellor <strong>Virginia Hinshaw<\/strong> announced that the university would honor these seven men by awarding them posthumous degrees.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;One of the goals of education institutions is for students to enter to learn and go forth to serve.
