  {"id":63810,"date":"2017-08-16T11:09:17","date_gmt":"2017-08-16T21:09:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=63810"},"modified":"2019-03-11T13:35:23","modified_gmt":"2019-03-11T23:35:23","slug":"exploring-meaning-and-management-of-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/08\/16\/exploring-meaning-and-management-of-water\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> campuses invited to explore Meaning and Management of Water"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z1_hYEHLm0M?showinfo=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>All University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> faculty, staff and community partners are invited to share research, writing, practices and teaching materials exploring the &ldquo;Meaning and Management of Water&rdquo; as part of <abbr>UH<\/abbr>&#8216;s annual systemwide focused inquiry project for <abbr title=\"Academic Year\">AY<\/abbr> 18&#8211;19.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty and community partners are invited to join the <a href=\"https:\/\/laulima.hawaii.edu\/portal\">Laulima<\/a> collaboration server platform <abbr title=\"System- Many Minds One University\">SYS MM1U<\/abbr> to share resources, learning outcomes, assignments and other teaching materials related to water. <\/p>\n<p>The initiative follows up on the successful <a href=\"http:\/\/sencerhawaii.com\/\">Grand Challenges of Water Summer Institute<\/a> which took place at the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus May 15&#8211;17, 2017, led by a strong coalition of partners in educational renewal. <\/p>\n<p>More than sixty faculty gathered with community partners at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus for three days working together across disciplines and institutions to develop curriculum exploring water issues with their students over the coming academic year.<\/p>\n<p>Economics instructor <strong>Jackie Lindo<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a> said, &ldquo;The sessions provided knowledge, resources and hands-on sustainability-related curriculum development. Perhaps more importantly, the institute provided a valuable opportunity for faculty across the system and across disciplines to share their teaching innovations and visions for increased collaboration, building excitement and hope for the future of higher education and sustainability initiatives in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Challenges related to water and water security are global, cross-cutting and fundamental to social justice,&rdquo; said <strong>Daniele Spirandeli<\/strong>, assistant professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. &ldquo;I have incorporated new pedagogies and resources into a new undergraduate research course that focuses on the myriad of ways that scholars, professionals and community members address water related issues that are of critical importance to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<h2>Many Minds, One University #MM1U<\/h2>\n<p>&ldquo;Imagine what the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> could accomplish if we were to focus our collective efforts and resources to answering one essential question of Sustainability?&rdquo; said <strong>Matthew K. Lynch<\/strong>, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> sustainability coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>On May 15, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sustainability\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Office of Sustainability<\/a> launched <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/sustainability\/mm1u17-18\">Many Minds, One University<\/a> for <abbr title=\"Academic Year\">AY<\/abbr> 18&#8211;19 to provide support for collaboration across campuses.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Today\u2019s first-year college students will be 30 years old in 2030, and they need to be equipped and involved now to manifest such goals. We can\u2019t let them down.&rdquo; said Professor <strong>Krista Hiser<\/strong>, who serves as <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> System sustainability curriculum coordinator. &ldquo;#MM1U is a project which will focus collective intellectual effort on one specific area of sustainability each year.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>#MM1U is designed to raise awareness of state goals like this one, from the Aloha &#43; Sustainability challenge, as well as the United National Sustainable Development goals framework and core concepts of sustainability.
