Thompson School of Social Work. The target completion date is August 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Renovations will consist of $12.5 million in upgrades that will improve the building&#8217;s aging interior and is designed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver Certification, promoting a more energy-efficient campus. Specific improvements include demolition of the basement, first and second floors and roof; spall repair on exterior walls; and installation of an elevator and accessible ramp inside the building.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The renovation of Gartley Hall is another example of &#699;polishing the M&#257;noa jewel,&#8217;&rdquo; said Chancellor <strong>Virginia Hinshaw<\/strong>.\u00a0 &ldquo;Our refreshed Gartley Hall will truly highlight our campus as a modernized instructional and office facility designed in a sustainable manner.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Gartley Hall history<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6331\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6331\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/gartley-260x165.jpg\" alt=\"Gartley Hall exterior\" width=\"260\" height=\"165\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/gartley-260x165.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/gartley.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6331\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Constructed in 1921, Gartley Hall is one of M&#257;noa&#8217;s oldest buildings in the &ldquo;Old Quadrangle,&rdquo; which includes Crawford, George, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and Dean halls.<\/p>\n<p>The building was named after Alonzo Gartley, who was a Honolulu businessman and the first chairman of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Board of Regents.<\/p>\n<p>Gartley Hall was originally designed as a laboratory facility for chemistry, physical and sugar technology.
