The transition was helped through four Summer Bridge programs that help students get acquainted with taking university courses, the campus and resources available to them. Additionally, high school students attended courses under a program operated under a partnership with the State Department of Education.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s been exciting,&rdquo; said <strong>Lokelani Kenolio<\/strong>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/noeaucenter\/\"><span aria-label=\"Noeau\">No&#699;eau<\/span> Center<\/a>, which hosted 48 Math Summer Bridge students. &ldquo;It&#8217;s wonderful to have more students on campus.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Summer Bridge programs typically are designed to enhance a student&#8217;s chances for success. At <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, the Summer Bridge students are familiarized with different support services on campus and develop a level of comfort with faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>Four bridge programs were offered during the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/summeracademy\/\">2017 Summer Academy<\/a>, one of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8217;s signature programs that help local high school graduates get an early start on college life. Three of these were grouped under\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/campus-life\/student-affairs\/student-success-initiatives\/summer-academy\/ke-ala-kauwela\/#\u2018Ike%20\u2018Ai%20Pono\">Ke Ala Kauwela<\/a>, a program aimed at helping incoming freshman from the <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Coast. Additionally, there was a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/default\/assets\/File\/student%20affairs\/2017%20Math%20Summer%20Bridge%20Flyer.pdf\">Math Summer Bridge <small>(PDF)<\/small><\/a>\u00a0for college freshmen that included a five credit college algebra course with embedded tutoring and peer coaching support services.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There were many more Summer Bridge students this year because of extensive partnerships with the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education, GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8217;s Pueo Scholars and Kamehameha Schools,&rdquo; said <strong>Melissa Saul<\/strong>, director of the Institute of Engaged Scholarship and project director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/title-iii\/programs\/2016\/09\/piko-project\/\"><abbr>PIKO<\/abbr> project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Saul said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> also has been working with local schools and Hawaiian charter schools to increase the college-going rates and college-readiness skills.
