The 39 women and 35 men were officially welcomed into the <abbr title=\"Medical Doctor\">MD<\/abbr> Class of 2021 at the <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (JABSOM) during a White Coat ceremony on July 14. The garments are what give the &ldquo;White Coat Ceremony&rdquo; its name. Wearing their cloaks, the future physicians become instantly recognizable on campus at <abbr title=\"John A. Burns School of Medicine\">JABSOM<\/abbr> and later at hospitals around <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, where they will undergo their clinical training. This year, former <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> First Lady Vicky Cayetano and United Laundry Services provided the coats as a gift to the class.<\/p>\n<h2>Inaugural James S. Burns Community Awards<\/h2>\n<p>The ceremony also honored two <abbr title=\"John A. Burns School of Medicine\">JABSOM<\/abbr> faculty members with the new <strong>James S. Burns<\/strong> Community Awards presented by the <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/foms\/\">Friends of the Medical School<\/a> (FOMS).<\/p>\n<p>The awards went to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/minimedschool\/faculty\/facultyIzutsu.html\">Satoru Izutsu<\/a><\/strong>, a <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> native and <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa alumnus, for his extraordinary impact on health care in his 25 years as <abbr title=\"John A. Burns School of Medicine\">JABSOM<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"Medical Doctor\">MD<\/abbr> admissions director. <strong>Jason Fleming<\/strong>, <abbr title=\"Friends of the Medical School\">FOMS<\/abbr> president said, &ldquo;Quite possibly every patient in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, and therefore every family in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, has been indirectly influenced by him; because every physician in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> in the past 30 years has been personally influenced by him in some way.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The second James S. Burns Community Award went to <strong>William Haning<\/strong>, psychiatry professor, addictions specialist and captain in the U.S. Navy Retired Reserve. &ldquo;He has served with distinction as the director of the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education at <abbr title=\"John A.
