High school students successfully completed a 6-week summer engineering course at Honolulu and Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Community Colleges<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

On July 20, 83 high school students successfully completed a 6-week course at Honolulu<\/a> and Hawai\u02bbi<\/span><\/a> Community Colleges. The Summer Engineering Academy<\/a> is designed to engage high school students interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM<\/abbr>) careers.<\/p>\n

Students learned the basics of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and\u00a0computer programming, including electronics, prototyping\u00a0and writing code. In addition, they were introduced to college study skills, learned about the college admissions and financial aid process, and gained advanced math and science skills.<\/p>\n

Throughout the summer experience, students met with project engineers during\u00a0a field trip to the HART<\/abbr> Waipahu Transit Center, and heard from organizations such as the Oceanit<\/a> and the University of Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s College of Engineering<\/a> and School of Architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe summer engineering program was designed to help the students choose a career path in an engineering discipline they enjoy. With practical hands on experiences students get a first-hand taste of the type of work involved in various engineering careers,\u201d shares Norman Takeya<\/strong>, assistant professor and coordinator of the Summer Engineering Academy.<\/p>\n

New funding and program expansion<\/h2>\n

This is the fifth year Honolulu CC<\/abbr> has offered this program that was initially funded by Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> P\u201320<\/a>. This year funding came from Representative Mark Nakashima\u2019s Work Force Development Advisory Committee on STEM<\/abbr> in partnership with the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations<\/a> (DLIR<\/abbr>).\u00a0Additional funding came from the Fujio Matsuda Technology fund. This year\u2019s funding allowed the program to be expanded to the Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Island where Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> CC<\/abbr> duplicated the program.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are so pleased to partner with Honolulu Community College in\u00a0giving\u00a0high school students a hands-on practical way to gain engineering and computer programming skills,\u201d says DLIR<\/abbr> Director, Linda Chu Takayama.\u00a0\u201cThe problem-solving approach used in this project can be applied to any job because it fosters hard work, initiative, and teamwork, which are valued by all employers. This project also helps students define their educational and career goals, which make a smoother transition from school to work.\u201d<\/p>\n
