{"id":62575,"date":"2017-07-24T14:18:01","date_gmt":"2017-07-25T00:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=62575"},"modified":"2023-03-15T13:19:05","modified_gmt":"2023-03-15T23:19:05","slug":"new-banking-curriculum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/07\/24\/new-banking-curriculum\/","title":{"rendered":"Industry sector partnerships lead to new banking curriculum"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Youtube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vQJKqkDicoc?showinfo=0\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>A new curriculum developed at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span><\/a> through a partnership with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>\u2019s banking industry will train the \u201cuniversal bankers\u201d of tomorrow.\u00a0Current bank employees at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbhawaii.com\/\">American Savings Bank<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boh.com\/personal\/\">Bank of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centralpacificbank.com\/\">Central Pacific Bank<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhb.com\/en\/\">First Hawaiian Bank<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiinational.bank\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> National Bank<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.financefactors.com\/\">Finance Factors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.territorialsavings.net\/\">Territorial Savings Bank<\/a> will pilot the course in July. Training will then be available through <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Community College<\/a> non-credit programs. It\u2019s one of the outcomes of innovative industry sector partnerships across the state.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last year, key leaders from business, education, economic development and workforce development have been coming together to better understand and collaboratively address workforce and economic development needs in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>.\u00a0Conceived by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and implemented by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cochawaii.org\/\">Chamber of Commerce <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span><\/a> (with assistance from Genz Consulting), these \u201csector partnerships\u201d are providing a statewide, structured process to convene stakeholders to collaboratively address issues around specific economic sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Partnerships have been established in sectors such as banking and finance, information technology, food manufacturing, healthcare, engineering and agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry Menor-McNamara, president and <abbr title=\"Chief Executive Officer\">CEO<\/abbr> of the Chamber of Commerce said, \u201cThe sector partnerships are changing the way business, education, workforce and economic development sectors are interacting to identify and, most significantly, address local workforce needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>\u2019s first sector partnership was launched in June 2016, championed by Rich Wacker, president and <abbr title=\"Chief Executive Officer\">CEO<\/abbr> of American Savings Bank, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaiiba.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Bankers Association<\/a>. Banking executives and human resource directors identified high priority talent needs in banking and finance and developed an agenda for improving their talent pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>Partners discussed the skills that all new hires will need to successfully enter a banking career. They established a universal banker steering committee to develop a training program for universal bankers. Bank subject matter experts and a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> curriculum design team worked together to develop a universal banker curriculum, specific to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>, that can be taken online, face-to-face or in a blended format.<\/p>\n<p>Neal Okabayashi, executive director of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Bankers Association said, \u201cThe curriculum and training will better prepare <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>\u2019s youth to enter the ever changing global market workforce of tomorrow.\u00a0This is a step to expand their employability in the face of new challenges in the banking industry.\u00a0The project resulted from a cooperative effort by stakeholders and was spearheaded by the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>, the Department of Education and the Chamber of Commerce.\u00a0We appreciate the diligent effort of our partners so that we may all serve <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sector partnership activities are part of <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s broader Building <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>\u2019s Innovation Economy and Workforce initiative, which was launched in January 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/46-million-usa-funds-grant\">with the support of Strada Education Network<\/a>.
