The Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Book Publishers Association<\/a> (HBPA) has presented its 2017 Ka Palapala Poʻokela<\/span> Award<\/a> for excellence in nonfiction to Curve of the Hook: An Archaeologist in Polynesia<\/a><\/em>, the summer 2016 volume of M\u0101noa: A Pacific Journal of International Writing<\/a><\/em>, published by the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Press<\/a>. HBPA<\/abbr>’s jurors considered eighty-five nominations in twelve publishing categories.<\/p>\n

In a book-length interview, illustrated with maps, charts, and previously unpublished photographs, Curve of the Hook<\/em> covers the life, career, and major achievements of Yosihiko Sinoto<\/strong>, former chair of the anthropology department at the Bishop Museum<\/a> and one of the foremost archaeologists in the Pacific. Sinoto is also a University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> alumnus.<\/p>\n

The book was edited by M\u0101noa’s editor, Frank Stewart<\/strong>, who translated Curve of the Hook<\/em> from the original Japanese with Madoka Nagad\u014d<\/strong>, a PhD<\/abbr> candidate in the UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa English department<\/a>. Nagad\u014d started work on the translation when she was the journal’s Grace K.J. Abernethy fellow.<\/p>\n
