Using concepts of sustainability, Hawaiian cultural and traditional practices within the diversity of locations such as the <span aria-label=\"Heeia\">He&#699;eia<\/span> wetlands, <span aria-label=\"Kaneohe\">K\u0101ne&#699;ohe<\/span> fishponds, Kualoa&#8217;s intertidal zones and many watersheds and estuaries along the Windward side, students complete the program with greater knowledge of their unique environment.<\/p>\n<p>Students use scientific surveying techniques of coral reefs at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a>\u00a0(HIMB) at Moku o <span aria-label=\"Loe\">Lo&#699;e<\/span> (Coconut Island). The pristine area is surrounded by an extensive, shallow coral reef, which makes for an ideal natural laboratory to study the health of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s reefs.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2><abbr>PaCES<\/abbr> symposium<\/h2>\n<p>The program concludes with the <abbr>PaCES<\/abbr> Student Research Project Symposium on July 15,\u00a08:30 a.m.&#8211;12:30 p.m. at Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>&#8217;s Uala Leaf Caf\u00e9 in Hale <span aria-label=\"Akoakoa\">&#699;\u0100koakoa<\/span>. Students will report on their group research projects. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kewalo.hawaii.edu\/index.php\/2013-08-02-03-42-22\/faculty\/robert-h-richmond\">Robert Richmond<\/a><\/strong>, director for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kewalo.hawaii.edu\/\">Kewalo Marine Laboratory<\/a>\u00a0will be the keynote speaker. The public is invited.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>More about <abbr>PaCES<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<p><abbr>PaCES<\/abbr> instructors <strong>Dave Krupp<\/strong>, Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> biological and marine science professor; Rob Hutchinson, Kamehameha Schools science instructor; Manning Taite, Pacific American Foundation Studies, Nalu Studies and Derek Esibill, Pacific American Foundation, WIRED have worked together for more than 12 years to create an educated community of young adults.<\/p>\n<p>Many graduates of the <abbr>PaCES<\/abbr> program have gone on to college to pursue their goals in areas including the marine sciences, environment, technology, ecology and biology.<\/p>\n<p>The students receive four college credits and a $1,000 scholarship.
