With 75,000 acres of the island&#8217;s <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;\u014dhi&#699;a<\/span> forest now showing symptoms of the disease, federal and state agencies and non-profit partners are using an array of high technology to detect its spread.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo&#8217;s team of researchers is headed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/directory\/view\/1554\">Ryan Perroy<\/a><\/strong>, an assistant professor in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/geography\/\">Department of Geography and Environmental Science<\/a>. The team of researchers is using a <abbr title=\"unmanned aerial vehicle\">UAV<\/abbr> off the side of Stainback Road, one of the epicenters of the infection. The team spends\u00a0about 25 percent of their time flying a <abbr>UAV<\/abbr> for rapid <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;\u014dhi&#699;a<\/span> death mapping and detection.<\/p>\n<p>The home base for the team is <a href=\"http:\/\/spatial.uhh.hawaii.edu\/index.htm\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo&#8217;s\u00a0Spatial Data Analysis and Visualization Laboratory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/news\/stories\/?s=Ryan+Perroy+UAV&#038;searchsubmit=\">Learn more about Perroy&#8217;s research and courses using <abbr>UAV<\/abbr>.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Perroy says the <abbr>UAV<\/abbr> has been in use in the battle against rapid <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;\u014dhi&#699;a<\/span> death for about a year and a half.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s very good for monitoring changes in the forest on an individual tree basis, because the resolution of the imagery is so fine that you can see individual leaves and branches,&ldquo; Perroy explains.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61650\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61650\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/hilo-perroy-uav.jpg\" alt=\"Ryan Perroy prepping a UAV\" width=\"620\" height=\"365\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/hilo-perroy-uav.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/hilo-perroy-uav-260x153.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-61650\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Â鶹´«Ã½Hilo researcher Ryan Perroy utilizes a UAV in the battle against Rapid <span aria-label=\"Ohia\">&#699;&#332;hi&#699;a<\/span> Death<\/a>. As valuable as the <abbr>UAV<\/abbr> imagery is, Perroy says it&#8217;s very difficult to fly over <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;\u014dhi&#699;a<\/span> forests every month and see the rapidity of tree decline.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s not the best day when we come back and we see more and more trees down since the last time we flew,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;Our efforts are one piece of the larger effort to better understand the disease and better protect our forests.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>All of the researchers and managers working to combat Rapid <span aria-label=\"Ohia\">&#699;&#332;hi&#699;a<\/span> Death agree that their collaborative efforts are about the only silver lining to what is a serious threat to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s most important native tree. <span aria-label=\"Ohia\">&#699;\u014chi&#699;a<\/span> protect the state&#8217;s watersheds by providing a sponge-effect to allow rainwater to slowly seep into underground aquifers.
