  {"id":61503,"date":"2017-06-16T13:31:59","date_gmt":"2017-06-16T23:31:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=61503"},"modified":"2020-08-07T14:38:15","modified_gmt":"2020-08-08T00:38:15","slug":"the-partnership-that-gave-hokulea-a-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/06\/16\/the-partnership-that-gave-hokulea-a-home\/","title":{"rendered":"The partnership that gave H\u014dk\u016ble\u02bba a home"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe title=\"Youtube video playerwidth=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L5vP5T6KeYE\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Since 2002, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokulea.com\/\">Polynesian Voyaging Society<\/a> (PVS) and Honolulu Community College\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/programs.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/metc\/\">Marine Education and Training Center<\/a> (METC) have been working together to develop a learning center that combines the voyaging and cultural expertise of <abbr>PVS<\/abbr> and the educational background of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> into a new, experience-driven format of training for future students.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership actually saved the venerable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokulea.com\/\">voyaging canoe <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span><\/a>. After returning to <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> from a historic trip to Tahiti in 1976, <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> had no permanent home and bounced around for a few years. <abbr>PVS<\/abbr> was looking for new berthing, and Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> stepped up. The vision was not only a home for <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span>, but a venue for integrating traditional and cultural skills and values with a community based educational institution.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are just so fortunate, so lucky, that there was a Marine Education Training Center and that there was a place to finally take care of <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span>,&rdquo; says <abbr>PVS<\/abbr> President Nainoa Thompson. &ldquo;[The <abbr>METC<\/abbr>] was a place that we could conduct the kinds of education that are tied to our values and contribute to the strengthening of Hawaiian culture.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61507\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61507\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/honolulu-metc-hokulea.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"397\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/honolulu-metc-hokulea.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/honolulu-metc-hokulea-260x166.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-61507\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Repairing and refurbishing <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> at Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8216;s Marine Education Training Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Restoring <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> would step up again in 2010, when tens of thousands of volunteer hours were donated at <abbr>METC<\/abbr> to repair and refurbish <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> in preparation for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokulea.com\/worldwide-voyage\/\">M\u0101lama Honua Worldwide Voyage<\/a>. The college is continuing its commitment to further develop navigation curriculum by offering <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/hokulea\">non-credit basic crew member training beginning in July 2017 at <abbr>METC<\/abbr><\/a>. Participants will learn about the history of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, parts of a canoe, seamanship and navigation basics.<\/p>\n<p>The 10-campus <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System has been an educational partner in the M\u0101lama Honua Worldwide Voyage, with hundreds of students, faculty and staff participating in multiple ways.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson often cites the late astronaut Lacy Veach when explaining the purpose of the worldwide voyage. Veach once said, &ldquo;When we figure out how to live well on our islands, we will have the most important gift we can give to the earth, and that is hope.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Thompson says, &ldquo;We are going to work towards that dream, and the key is the university.
