It may soon be possible to sail on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokulea.com\/\">Polynesian Voyaging Society canoe <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span><\/a>, view the stars and constellations at sea and navigate using traditional wayfinding techniques all from your home, thanks to virtual reality. It\u2019s a project called Kilo H\u014dk\u016b, which roughly translates to navigating the stars. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You can buy a [virtual reality] headset at a very low price and be able to use it just like anybody else,&rdquo; explains <strong>Dean Lodes<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/academics\/learning-design-technology-ltec\">Learning Design and Technology<\/a> PhD student.<\/p>\n<p>Kilo H\u014dk\u016b simulates being onboard the <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> and looking up into a cloudless sky. Lodes was part of a team of <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> students who created the program at the <a href=\"http:\/\/lava.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Laboratory for Advanced Visualization and Applications<\/a> (LAVA) at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61402\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61402\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/manoa-kilo-hoku-2-260x146.jpg\" alt=\"image of Hokulea sailing canoe\" width=\"260\" height=\"146\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-61402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/manoa-kilo-hoku-2-260x146.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/manoa-kilo-hoku-2.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-61402\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kilo H\u014dk\u016b&#8217;s virtual <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;I guess when you are a kid, when you hear about the <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span>, it\u2019s like they\u2019re adventurers! It sounds so exciting and just so awesome,&rdquo; says team member <strong>Kari Noe<\/strong>, an undergraduate student of the <a href=\"http:\/\/acmsystem.hawaii.edu\/\">Academy for Creative Media<\/a> and the computer science department.<\/p>\n<p>Kilo H\u014dk\u016b allows users to navigate using the stars in a virtual setting. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Basically what I did was created a sphere model, and then I took images from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\"><abbr title=\"National Aeronautics and Space Administration\">NASA<\/abbr><\/a> and I pretty much mapped them on the reverse side of the sphere,&rdquo; explains <strong>Anna Sikkink<\/strong>, a recent computer science graduate. &ldquo;Then you can just put the <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> inside and look around.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The team hopes to someday make the program available to the public for free.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I really want this to be a very Hawaiian learning tool.
