{"id":60760,"date":"2017-05-25T14:32:28","date_gmt":"2017-05-26T00:32:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=60760"},"modified":"2019-03-06T13:11:11","modified_gmt":"2019-03-06T23:11:11","slug":"manoa-students-create-star-wars-simulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/05\/25\/manoa-students-create-star-wars-simulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Students create Star Wars simulation on world\u2019s best hybrid visualization system"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Youtube video player\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kuTaRwFCu4c\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\">In honor of the 40th Anniversary of <em>Star Wars<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> engineering graduate student <strong>Noel Kawano<\/strong> and computer science student <strong>Ryan Theriot<\/strong> created a 3D immersive visualization project&#8212;<em>Star Wars Squadron and Tatooine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Users can battle with lightsabers or dogfight through a universe filled with starfighters, TIE fighters and an armada of star destroyers.<\/p>\n<p>The (research and fun) possibilities are endless now that <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa is home to the best hybrid visualization system in the world that combines immersive virtual reality with ultra-high-resolution display walls. The <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/uhmlavalab\/CyberCANOE\/wiki\">Destiny-class CyberCANOE<\/a>, which stands for cyber-enabled Collaboration Analysis Navigation and Observation Environment.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We wanted to take advantage of the [Destiny-class CyberCANOE\u2019s] capabilities and make something really cool,&rdquo; Kawano said.<\/p>\n<p>CyberCANOE users can go under the sea, explore outer space and probe microscopic elements of the human body without leaving campus.<\/p>\n<p>Computer and Information Sciences Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.hawaii.edu\/~leighj\/JASON_LEIGH\/Jason_Leigh_Home_Page.html\"><strong>Jason Leigh<\/strong><\/a> is the system\u2019s creator. His students were deeply involved in the design and construction of the CyberCANOE with investment and partnership from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\">National Science Foundation<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/acmsystem.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Academy for Creative Media System<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With 256 megapixels, the cylindrical CyberCANOE is the ultimate tool for scientists and researchers to visualize big data at resolutions that are 100-times better than commercial 3D displays. The diameter is 16 feet, and the walls are eight-feet high.<\/p>\n<p>The Destiny-class cost about $250,000 to build and is actually the seventh and best CyberCANOE Leigh has built in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> over the past couple of years.
