  {"id":60711,"date":"2017-05-24T09:04:34","date_gmt":"2017-05-24T19:04:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=60711"},"modified":"2019-03-06T13:04:36","modified_gmt":"2019-03-06T23:04:36","slug":"2017-frank-newman-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/05\/24\/2017-frank-newman-award\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> plays role in national award for improvement in education in Hawai\u02bbi"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/students-studying.jpg\" alt=\"Students studying at a bench outside\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/students-studying.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/students-studying-260x173.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\">The state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/portal.criticalimpact.com\/vm.cfm?i=B9170277B61CC1BA\">received the 2017 Frank Newman Award for improvements in public education<\/a> by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecs.org\/\">Education Commission of the States<\/a>, a national organization that advocates for education. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> was recognized for numerous initiatives including focusing school accountability on students&#8217; college and career readiness, supporting teachers and education leaders, developing a comprehensive longitudinal data system and investing in data literacy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> worked diligently to positively change the landscape of education in the state and dramatically improved and enhanced the structure of education in its schools, as well as outcomes for its students,&rdquo; said Jeremy Anderson, president of Education Commission of the States.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership between the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Education (HIDOE) was key to many of the accomplishments noted in award. The development of the statewide longitudinal data system, coordinated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaiidxp.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Data eXchange Partnership<\/a> (DXP), a division of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.p20hawaii.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> P&#8211;20 Partnerships for Education,<\/a> has been instrumental in providing the data used in <abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr>&#8217;s accountability system, including the data reported in the annual College and Career Readiness Indicators Reports, which measure key indicators of student readiness for college and careers including college enrollment rates, earning college credits before graduation, Advanced Placement participation and completion of career pathways. <\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr title=\"Data eXchange Partnership\">DXP<\/abbr>&#8217;s reporting has also led to policy changes that have reduced remediation rates at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr>.
