They have learned to deal with challenges such as a 20-minute communications delay, gearing up in hazmat suits to explore the geologic features of the landing site and cooking with dehydrated food.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The midpoint is an interesting time in the mission,&rdquo; observed crewmember <strong>Brian Ramos<\/strong>. &ldquo;In some sense, time has been flying by. It sounds a little crazy, but I think at the end of the mission I am not going to be ready to go.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60507\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60507\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/manoa-hiseas-v-exterior.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/manoa-hiseas-v-exterior-260x146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"146\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-60507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/manoa-hiseas-v-exterior-260x146.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/manoa-hiseas-v-exterior.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60507\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The HI-SEAS dome on Mauna Loa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> stands for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, which is run on Mauna Loa by the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a>. The <abbr title=\"National Aeronautics and Space Administration\">NASA<\/abbr>-funded research is focused on crew selection, teamwork and cohesion. Crewmembers have been keeping busy with various experiments and projects. Ramos&#8217; personal project is 3D printing, something that may be useful in longer duration space missions of the future. He\u02bbs printed objects ranging from cookie cutters to test tube holders.<\/p>\n<p>According to engineering officer <strong>Ansley Barnard<\/strong>, cooking has been an important part of living in the <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> habitat, and the crew eats really well.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Cooking is one of my main hobbies, and I really enjoy it in the habitat,&rdquo; Barnard said. &ldquo;It&#8217;s fun to make new recipes, to try things out and make something delicious for your crewmates.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Growing and harvesting fresh herbs for crew consumption is the important work of the crew&#8217;s mission specialist for biology <strong>Joshua Ehrlich<\/strong>.
