The international challenge is to rehabilitate a critical <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> watershed that contains one of the nation&#8217;s most polluted bodies of water. Make the Ala Wai Awesome is sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> and includes $10,000 in total prize money.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are excited about the innovative ideas that the challenge has sparked,&rdquo; said <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> President <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/leadership\/david-lassner\/\">David Lassner<\/a><\/strong>. &ldquo;The entries demonstrated that students are more than willing and able to collaboratively address the challenges before us all with creative, holistic and thoughtful system designs that integrate modern concepts with traditional knowledge to show the way to a brighter future.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/uhawaii\/sets\/72157683774569636\/\">View finalists selected<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/uhawaii\/sets\/72157682755174296\">View all entries<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> faculty representing all ten campuses gathered to commence the final round of judging, and to kick off an interdisciplinary conference focused on Science Education for New Civic Engagement and Responsibility and solving the <a href=\"http:\/\/sencerhawaii.com\/\">Grand Challenges of Water<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Special thanks also to all the of the jurors who participated in the first round of judging, representing key stakeholders throughout the Ala Wai Watershed,&rdquo; said <strong>Matthew K.
