{"id":60122,"date":"2017-05-11T11:03:05","date_gmt":"2017-05-11T21:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=60122"},"modified":"2019-03-05T15:49:26","modified_gmt":"2019-03-06T01:49:26","slug":"rapid-ohia-death-portable-testing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/05\/11\/rapid-ohia-death-portable-testing\/","title":{"rendered":"New portable testing speeds detection of Rapid \u02bb\u014chi\u02bba Death pathogens"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_41174\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41174\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/hilo-rapid-ohia-death.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/hilo-rapid-ohia-death.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/hilo-rapid-ohia-death-260x195.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41174\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(photo from <abbr title='College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources\">CTAHR<\/abbr>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\">Researchers have developed a new, more efficient tool for detecting the pathogens believed to be the cause of rapid &#699;&#333;hi&#699;a death, according to a recently published study by the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/hcsu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Cooperative Studies Unit<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/centers\/pierc\"><abbr title=\"United States Geological Survey\">USGS<\/abbr> Pacific Islands Ecosystem Research Center<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/\"><abbr title=\"United States Department of Agriculture\">USDA<\/abbr> Agriculture Research Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The authors of the report&#8212;<a href=\"https:\/\/dspace.lib.hawaii.edu\/handle\/10790\/3025\">A rapid diagnostics test and mobile &ldquo;lab-in-a-suitcase&rdquo; platform for detecting Ceratocystis spp. responsible for rapid &#699;&#333;hi&#699;a death<\/a>&#8212;have developed a portable lab for diagnostic field testing for the two species of fungal pathogens that infect &#699;&#333;hi&#699;a (<em>Metrosideros polymorpha<\/em>). The portable lab, which provides quick results and reduces instrumentation costs, is currently being used by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biisc.org\/\">Big Island Invasive Species Committee<\/a> to detect infected trees and identify the distribution of the pathogens.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Having this portable lab gives us the capability to do our own diagnostics and get a quicker answer about whether or not a tree is positive for rapid &#699;&#333;hi&#699;a death,&rdquo; says Bill Buckley, forest response coordinator for the invasive species committee and leader of their Rapid &#699;&#333;hi&#699;a Death Early Detection and Rapid Response Team. &ldquo;The result then allows us to take management actions right away or do more targeted testing.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/hdoa.hawaii.gov\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Agriculture<\/a> is also planning to use the portable lab to help screen shipments of &#699;&#333;hi&#699;a logs for the pathogens.<\/p>\n<p>Rapid &#699;&#333;hi&#699;a death was first identified in the lower Puna district of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island in 2014, and now infects more than 50,000 acres of private and state forest lands on the island.
