The program would cover tuition, fees, books, supplies and transportation.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The university would like to thank the state legislature and governor for their support of this initial program to improve access to public higher education for local students with financial need,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/leadership\/david-lassner\/\"><strong>David Lassner<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The legislature recognized the importance of this program, and I&#8217;m pleased that we were able to work together to help families fill the gap between what they can afford and what it actually takes for students to go to college,&rdquo; said Govenor <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.hawaii.gov\/\">David Ige<\/a>. &ldquo;When armed with knowledge and training, our students will have the skills they need to solve the challenges we face in communities across the state.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"House Bill\">HB<\/abbr> 1594 was originally introduced by Representative <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/memberpage.aspx?member=woodson\">Justin H. Woodson<\/a> who worked with Lassner, Vice President for Community Colleges <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/leadership\/john-morton\/\"><strong>John Morton<\/strong><\/a> and Vice President for Budget and Finance and <abbr title=\"chief financial officer\">CFO<\/abbr> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/leadership\/kalbert-young\/\"><strong>Kalbert Young<\/strong><\/a> to draft the bill establishing this program. Although <abbr>HB<\/abbr> 1594 did not pass the legislature, the funding for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Promise was included in <abbr>HB<\/abbr> 100 <abbr title=\"Conference Draft\">CD<\/abbr>1.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible students will have to qualify for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> resident tuition and be enrolled in a degree or certificate program at a <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> community college for at least six credits per semester.
