She is just one of the exciting features of the new &#699;Ike Mauli Ola Nursing Simulation Laboratory at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think it will make (us) better nurses and better students when we&#8217;re in clinicals, and it will help to get rid of the jitters of dealing with real people,&rdquo; said Hosaka, who was recently accepted to the fall 2017 cohort of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> bachelor of science in nursing program. &ldquo;It&#8217;s exciting. It will allow us to make mistakes and not on real people. Everything we&#8217;ve learned so far has been in textbooks. Now we have something that have fevers, and give birth, it&#8217;s a great idea.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8217;s pre-nursing\/health science pathway<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees-and-certificates\/prenursing\/\">pre-nursing\/health science pathway<\/a> allows students to complete prerequisites and transition into <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/nursing\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo&#8217;s <abbr title=\"bachelor of science in nursing\">BSN<\/abbr><\/a> without the need to physically be on the Hilo campus. With &#699;Ike Mauli Ola Nursing Simulation Laboratory, students now have the working environment needed to complete the <abbr>BSN<\/abbr> program. It provides the equipment and environment for patient care simulations and distance learning opportunities. The simulation lab features four hospital beds, with an adult birthing model, and three life size mannequins used for simulation experiences.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59120\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59120\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/west-oahu-nursing-simulation-students.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/west-oahu-nursing-simulation-students-260x164.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"164\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-59120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/west-oahu-nursing-simulation-students-260x164.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/west-oahu-nursing-simulation-students-480x300.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/west-oahu-nursing-simulation-students.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59120\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nursing students (photo by Brian Miyamoto)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The opportunity to take <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo courses on the Kapolei campus through the &#699;Ike Mauli Ola pre-nursing\/health science pathway &ldquo;gives people like me the chance to realize our dreams,&rdquo; said Hosaka, who works full-time as a scheduler for operating room at Wahiaw&#257; General Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The simulation lab enables nursing students to rehearse both common clinical scenarios and critical incidents for improved real patient outcomes. Such simulation scenarios further enhance and contextualize learning objectives in preparation for real patient encounters. The lab provides the equipment and environment for patient care simulations and distance learning opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Simulation has gathered increasing acceptance over the years as an integral part of healthcare training and a fundamental approach to improving patient safety practice,&rdquo; PIKO Project Director <strong>Melissa Saul<\/strong> said. &ldquo;Having the proper equipment and working environment gives students the tools to succeed and receive the full educational experience including hands-on practice.&ldquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Title <abbr title=\"Roman numeral three\">III<\/abbr> PIKO Project is a Title <abbr>III<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"Alaska Native-Serving and Native Hawaiian-Serving\">ANNH<\/abbr> Federal Grant dedicated to building capacity for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> with a focus on promoting the health and wellness of students.
