Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (JABSOM) faculty, staff and students joined hands in prayer, remembering the late James S. Burns, longtime friend of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, during a ceremony in his honor last week. The memorial service was held in the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> Mala La&#699;au Lapa&#699;au, or Native Hawaiian healing garden, a setting where those gathered could reflect on the retired judge&#8217;s life and his many contributions in support of the school.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59100\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59100\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/manoa-jabsom-burns-lama-tree.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-full wp-image-59100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/manoa-jabsom-burns-lama-tree.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/manoa-jabsom-burns-lama-tree-260x173.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59100\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A lama tree planted in Judge Burns\u2019 honor in the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> healing garden.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Burns&#8217; widow, Emme Tomimbang, television host and producer, and his adult children, Brendan Burns, an educator, and Meredith Burns, an attorney, attended the garden ceremony which included the planting of a lama tree, which is associated with enlightenment, in the Honorable James Burns&#8217; name.<\/p>\n<p>Burns was incredibly dedicated to the medical school that was named after his father John A. Burns, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s former governor. Even when he was a busy justice on the state&#8217;s second-highest court, Burns attended virtually every <abbr\">JABSOM<\/abbr> White Coat Ceremony, Convocation Ceremony and Dean&#8217;s Circle event. He offered his advice and counsel as a member of the board of the University Health Partners of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and served as president of the Friends of the Medical School, which was established to support medical students and their families.
