The campus-wide celebration weaved together the Hawaiian culture, sustainable choices, career opportunities and community involvement.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a was joyful for so many members of the campus community.\u00a0There was an authentic exchange of knowledge, art and culture,&rdquo; shared <strong>Emily Kukulies<\/strong>, director of <a href=\"http:\/\/programs.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/studentlife\/\">Student Life and Development<\/a>.\u00a0&ldquo;The feeling of an active and engaged community was very present. The planning committee is thankful for the many event sponsors and more than 100 volunteers who helped the vision come to life.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>6th\u00a0Annual Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/h2>\n<p>Every April, for the past six years, the campus celebrates the start of\u00a0Ka M&#257;la o Niuhelewai (The garden of Niuhelewai).\u00a0Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a is a day when the students, faculty and staff come out to enjoy food prepared in the imu, ku&#699;i &#699;ai (poi pounding), lei making, Hawaiian games and activities and live Hawaiian music.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Ka M&#257;la o Niuhelewai, has been an instrumental hands-on venue for our campus and the community in supporting the Hawaiian understanding of sustainable m&#257;lama &#699;&#257;ina application for producing food for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; shares\u00a0<strong>Mark Alapaki Luke<\/strong>, chair of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/node\/692\">K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>: Hawaiian Programs Division<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2011, thanks to a grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, 20 Hawaiian varieties of kalo have been planted in the garden.<\/p>\n<h2>Sustainability Showcase<\/h2>\n<p>In anticipation for Earth Day on April 22, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/sustainability\">Sustainability Showcase<\/a> featured arts and crafts, plant cuttings, a Trash to Treasure contest,\u00a0eco-friendly demonstrations and informational booths.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our goal is to educate our campus community about the choices they can make now to live a more sustainable lifestyle,&rdquo; said <strong>Cynthia Smith<\/strong>, professor of history and member of the campus sustainability committee.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Trash to Treasure showcase were community partner and student led informational booths and demonstrations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Department of Education (Leilehua Complex)\u2028<\/li>\n<li>HNL Tools Exchange<\/li>\n<li>\u2028Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation<\/li>\n<li>\u2028Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> Automotive Technology&#8212;Emissions\/Electric Cars\u2028<\/li>\n<li>Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Botany&#8212;Plant Seedlings\u2028<\/li>\n<li>Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"course alpha identification code\">IS<\/abbr> 197&#8212;Composting<\/li>\n<li>Legislative Outreach\u2028<\/li>\n<li>Johnson Controls<\/li>\n<li>\u2028Transit Oriented Development Group\u2028<\/li>\n<li>Walkwise\/Pedestrian Safety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Spring Career Fair<\/h2>\n<p>Held annually, the Career Fair gives students a broad exposure to not only jobs for today, but jobs that will lead to a rewarding career.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Students are able to put into practice their communication skills when meeting with employers,&rdquo;
