In March, in recognition of these accomplishments, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiitourismauthority.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Tourism Authority<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meethawaii.com\/\">Meet <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> (a collaboration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hvcb.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Visitors and Convention Bureau<\/a> and the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Convention Center) named the college the &#699;Elele Organization of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>College of Engineering Interim Dean <strong>Ron Riggs<\/strong> said, &ldquo;The College of Engineering is grateful to be recognized for the contributions we make to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s economy via the visitor industry. Engineering is, of course, critical to our technology-based economy, and it has been recognized by the governor as a driver of innovation, but this award shows the importance of a side benefit of the work we do to bring international researchers to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> for technical meetings.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G8lJ6QX_i44\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>Through the &#699;Elele program, Meet <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> brings together kama&#699;aina (locals) who have ties to national and international organizations in order to attract mutually beneficial meetings and conventions for the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Convention Center. Since the opening of the center, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr>&#8217;s 10-campus system has helped to attract meetings and conventions business worth more than $500 million.<\/p>\n<p>Significant contributors within the College of Engineering include Professors <strong>Wayne Shiroma<\/strong> and <strong>Magdy Iskander<\/strong>, who have organized international meetings generating $75.5 million and $65 million in visitor spending, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;One of my proudest and most satisfying accomplishments ever was leading a team that organized Âé¶¹´«Ã½&#8217;s largest conference and exhibition in 2007, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers International Microwave Symposium or <abbr>IMS<\/abbr> 2007,&rdquo; Shiroma said. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>IMS<\/abbr> 2007 attracted more than 7,000 attendees and nearly 300 exhibiting companies from 25 different countries. It also generated $34 million in visitor spending. Shiroma&#8217;s students also gained valuable experience by helping to work on <abbr>IMS<\/abbr> 2007. (Photo: Keith Uehara Photography)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>Other <abbr>UH<\/abbr> individuals who were recognized for their significant contributions to the &#699;Elele Program included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chris Ostrander<\/strong>, assistant dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> for the Ocean Observation Conference, scheduled in September 2019. The meeting is expected to draw up to 3,000 participants and have an economic impact of  at least $5.6 million.<\/li>\n<li>Professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/GG\/\">Geology and Geophysics<\/a> <strong>Kenneth Rubin<\/strong> for the Geochemical Society: Goldschmidt Conference in June 2020. This meeting is expected to draw 3,500 participants and have an economic impact of  $16.5 million.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Sea Grant&#8217;s<\/a> <strong>Darren Lerner<\/strong> and <strong>Darren Okimoto<\/strong> and <strong>Andre Seale<\/strong> were part of a group that secured the World Aquaculture Society meeting in February 2020.
