The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>–West Oʻahu<\/span> Library<\/a>, a focal point of the campus, will now be called the James and Abigail Campbell Library, named after the campus’s largest benefactor. The UH<\/abbr> Board of Regents approved the new name at its March 23 meeting.<\/p>\n

“Our library is a key gathering place for scholars, students and community members to learn, explore and discover by engaging both the digital and the physical,” said UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> Chancellor Maenette Benham<\/a><\/strong>. “What better place to acknowledge the gift of knowledge that the Campbell ʻohana has so graciously given. It’s a place that inspires!”<\/p>\n

The James Campbell Company (formerly known as the James Campbell Estate) gifted UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> approximately 941 acres of estate land in Kapolei in 1995 as part of an agreement between the company and the State of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n

“On behalf of the James Campbell Company<\/a> and the Campbell Family Foundation<\/a>, we deeply appreciate this honor,” said Tim Brauer, president and chief executive officer of the James Campbell Company. “While our contributions have helped to create the UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> campus in Kapolei, we appreciate the ongoing contributions of its dedicated students, administrators, faculty and staff in shaping its future as an integral part of the Kapolei region and the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> system.”<\/p>\n

The UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> campus opened in Kapolei in 2012 after residing in temporary facilities for nearly four decades. The library serves as a landmark for the campus. Its 100-square foot stained glass tower features artwork by Kauaʻi<\/span> artist Carol Bennett and can be seen from miles away when lit. The two-story, 60,000-square-foot building boasts a print collection of more than 31,000 titles, and access to more than 60 electronic research databases. It includes notable programs on campus such as the UluʻUlu Moving Image Archives<\/a>, Noeʻau Tutoring Center<\/a> and the Center for Labor Education and Research<\/a>.<\/p>\n
