  {"id":57854,"date":"2017-03-21T13:01:21","date_gmt":"2017-03-21T23:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=57854"},"modified":"2019-02-28T16:56:50","modified_gmt":"2019-03-01T02:56:50","slug":"uh-press-publishes-open-access-hawaiian-language-journal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/03\/21\/uh-press-publishes-open-access-hawaiian-language-journal\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Press publishes open-access Hawaiian language journal"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/manoa-uh-press-palapala.jpg\" alt=\"Palapala journal cover\" width=\"250\" height=\"357\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-57859\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/manoa-uh-press-palapala.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/manoa-uh-press-palapala-182x260.jpg 182w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhpress.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Press<\/a> now publishes the new, open-access resource for Hawaiian scholars, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhpress.hawaii.edu\/t-palapala.aspx\"><em>Palapala: a journal for Hawaiian language and literature<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The entirety of <em>Palapala<\/em> volume 1, issue 1, which includes contemporary research in both Hawaiian and English, is freely available at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhpress.hawaii.edu\/t-palapala.aspx\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Press website<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are honored to offer, through a collaboration with the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> library<\/a> and the support of the university, an online journal of such scholarly importance to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said <strong>Joel Cosseboom<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Press interim director.<\/p>\n<p><em>Palapala<\/em> joins <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Press&#8217;s extensive list of Hawaiian studies titles, including <em>The Hawaiian Journal of History<\/em>, <em>Kanaka &#699;&#332;iwi Methodologies<\/em> and the <em>Hawaiian Dictionary<\/em>. It is the first peer-reviewed Hawaiian language journal to be published exclusively online.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In spite of a vast and complex body of literature written in Hawaiian and a growing number of speakers, there has not been, until now, an academic journal dedicated to either the study of the language or the literature produced in it,&rdquo; said <em>Palapala<\/em> editor <strong>Jeffrey &ldquo;Kapali&rdquo; Lyon<\/strong> of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Department of Religion.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<em>Palapala<\/em> is intended to fill that gap as a peer-reviewed journal that allows scholars of Hawaiian from around the globe to present the results of their research through a centralized, scholarly archive dedicated to cherishing, preserving and advancing our knowledge of the native language of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> nei,&rdquo; Lyon said.<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural issue also features reprints from the Hawaiian alphabet, first published in 1822, and an anonymous 1857 account about translating the Bible into Hawaiian.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are excited to publish the first issue of <em>Palapala<\/em>,&rdquo; said <strong>Pamela Wilson<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Press journals manager. &ldquo;This journal truly aligns with our mission to be a Native Hawaiian place of learning and an indigenous-serving institution.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2><em>Palapala<\/em> editorial board, submission guidelines and more<\/h2>\n<p><em>Palapala <\/em>receives support from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa&#8217;s <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Press and the following departments: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/arthum\/\">College of Arts &amp; Humanities<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui\u0101kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/llea\/\">College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature<\/a> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olelo.hawaii.edu\/\">Ka Haka <span aria-label=\"Ula\">&#699;Ula<\/span> O Ke&#699;elik&#333;lani, College of Hawaiian Language<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The journal&#8217;s editorial board includes <abbr>UH<\/abbr> faculty members <strong>Joseph &ldquo;Keola&rdquo; Donaghy<\/strong>, <strong>ku&#699;ualoha ho&#699;omanawanui<\/strong> and <strong>Hiapokeikik&#257;ne K.
