Nationally, suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students, yet suicide is preventable. On\u00a0March 15, more than 150\u00a0students, employees and community members are registered to participate in Honolulu Community College’s<\/a> 2nd Annual Out of Darkness campus\u00a0walk.<\/p>\n

This walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s<\/a> local and national programs and its bold goal to reduce the annual rate of suicide 20 percent by 2025.<\/p>\n

“We hope that by walking we save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide,” says Kimberly Gallant<\/strong>, licensed clinical social worker of Honolulu CC<\/abbr>’s Wellness Center. “The college is\u00a0honored\u00a0to host this walk on our campus.” \\<\/p>\n

The event will include organizations who will share information about their services to the campus community and a special remembrance take away activity is planned for participants.\u00a0The one mile walk will start at noon on the campus mall and continue along Kokea Street and\u00a0Dillingham\u00a0Boulevard.<\/p>\n

The Honolulu CC<\/abbr> Out of Darkness Walk is one of more than 360 Out of the Darkness Community Walks being held nationwide this year. The walks are expected to unite more than 100,000 walkers and raise millions for suicide prevention efforts.<\/p>\n
