{"id":57324,"date":"2017-03-13T13:40:27","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T23:40:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=57324"},"modified":"2019-03-27T15:03:32","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T01:03:32","slug":"innovative-manoa-counseling-program-recognized-by-governor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/03\/13\/innovative-manoa-counseling-program-recognized-by-governor\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovative M\u0101noa counseling program recognized by governor"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lmeUmivZD1E?rel=0&#038;showinfo=0\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/counseling\/training_programs\/cir.php\">Counselor-in-Residence program<\/a>, where five counselors live in student housing to provide emergency and immediate counseling services to residents and staff, has received some well deserved recognition. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.hawaii.gov\/governors-bio\/\">Govenor <strong>David Ige<\/strong><\/a> issued a proclamation in 2017 honoring the program for its positive impact on students. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naspa.org\/\">National Association of Student Personnel Administrators<\/a> also recognized the program with an award for innovation in the region in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I just wanted to add my personal congratulations to the counseling in residence who really provide a vital and needed service to our community,&rdquo; said Govenor Ige.<\/p>\n<p>The counselors in residence provide crisis intervention to students and referrals, training and other services to student housing staff. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There are not too many community agencies, not too many resources that are open in the evenings or on the weekends, so we are there,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/counseling\/about\/meet_the_staff.php#atanouye\"><strong>Allyson Tanouye<\/strong><\/a>, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Counseling and Student Development Center director. &ldquo;We are there to take care of the full range of emergencies that our residencies have.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are really proud of our counselors in residence program,&rdquo; said Interim <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Chancellor <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>. &ldquo;Mental health is a very serious issue, on college campuses and throughout our community.
