The project was initiated by the late Professor <strong>Maqsudul Alam<\/strong> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/microbiology\/\">Department of Microbiology<\/a>, and garnered the support of Bangladesh&#8217;s prime minister and agriculture minister.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/natsci.manoa.hawaii.edu\">College of Natural Sciences<\/a> research team, which included <abbr title=\"Advanced Studies in Genomics, Proteomics and Bioinformatics\">ASGPB<\/abbr>&#8217;s <strong>Jennifer Saito<\/strong>, <strong>Xuehua Wan<\/strong> and <strong>Shaobin Hou<\/strong> published the results in the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nplants2016223\"><em>Nature Plants<\/em><\/a> on January 30.<\/p>\n<h2>A biodegradable alternative to synthetic materials<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_56803\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56803\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/manoa-natural-science-jute.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-56803\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jute fiber<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jute, known as the &ldquo;golden fiber,&rdquo; is the world&#8217;s second most important natural fiber after cotton, due to its eco-friendly nature, affordability and versatility. The demand for jute fiber is increasing worldwide as biodegradable alternatives to synthetic materials are sought for a range of purposes.<\/p>\n<p>The &gt;400 Mbp genome sequences of both cultivated species, <em>Corchorus olitorius<\/em> and <em>Corchorus capsularis<\/em>, will be used in work to improve the plants&#8217; traits, such as fiber quality, yield, disease resistance and salinity tolerance.<\/p>\n<p>Gene expression analysis has provided insight into the molecular basis of fiber formation.
