Cosmos and Culture (Astronomy 381\/394) delves into historical, intellectual, social and cultural context of astronomical discovery from a multitude of perspectives including the exploration of both scientific and nonscientific cosmologies.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_56263\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56263\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/uhhilo-catherineishida-maunakeacourse.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/uhhilo-catherineishida-maunakeacourse.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/uhhilo-catherineishida-maunakeacourse-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-56263\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Catherine Ishida<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students in the class are exploring the skills and knowledge astronomers need&#8212;in addition to astronomy&#8212;to engage constructively in conversations about the past, present and future of Maunakea.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/news\/stories\/category\/topical-issues\/maunakeatmt\/\">More <em><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo Stories<\/em> on Maunakea<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The course invites students to investigate topics such as cultural astronomy, the philosophy of science, the history of astronomy, Hawaiian studies, cultural studies and other fields.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I hope stepping back and evaluating the big picture, whether it&#8217;s the cosmology of a particular culture, the scientific enterprise, or their own lives, will become a habit for students in this course,&rdquo; says <strong>Catherine Ishida<\/strong>, who is teaching the class.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the course, Ishida says students will be able to describe a variety of past and present cosmologies, discuss relationships between astrophysical and non-astrophysical cosmologies, and place them into historical, cultural, and personal context.
