{"id":55748,"date":"2017-02-07T08:05:06","date_gmt":"2017-02-07T18:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=55748"},"modified":"2019-02-28T13:46:16","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T23:46:16","slug":"award-winning-social-innovator-selected-as-inouye-chair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/02\/07\/award-winning-social-innovator-selected-as-inouye-chair\/","title":{"rendered":"Award-winning social innovator selected as Inouye chair"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ft-uRpb1mic?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\"\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Ai-jen Poo, who helped lead the way to the passage of the nation&#8217;s first Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, has been named the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa spring 2017 Dan and Maggie Inouye Distinguished Chair in Democratic Ideals.<\/p>\n<p>Poo, an award-winning social innovator, thought leader and author, is the co-director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caringacross.org\/\">Caring Across Generations<\/a> and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.domesticworkers.org\/\">National Domestic Workers Alliance<\/a>, one of the partner organizations of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womensmarch.com\/\">Women&#8217;s March on Washington<\/a>. Poo&#8217;s early organizing led the way to the passage of the nation&#8217;s first Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, the 2010 historic legislation that extends basic labor protections to more than 200,000 domestic workers in New York state. As part of her month-long term as the Inouye Distinguished Chair, Poo will be guest teaching an undergraduate course and a graduate course on social movements with <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa American Studies Professor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/person\/robert-perkinson\">Robert Perkinson<\/a><\/strong>. We are thrilled that she will be with us, and that students, faculty and the public will have ample opportunity to engage with her.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ken Inouye, the son of Dan and Maggie Inouye says his mother would especially be pleased with the Poo&#8217;s selection.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;She is an Asian American woman whose lifelong focus has been to advocate for those whose jobs are to care for others,&rdquo; said Inouye. &ldquo;At a time when the rights of so many are precarious at best, she offers us a constructive approach toward the future.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Poo&#8217;s numerous accolades include recognition as one of the Fortune.com <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/worlds-greatest-leaders\/2015\/ai-jen-poo-14\/\">World&#8217;s 50 Greatest Leaders in 2015<\/a>, a 2014 MacArthur Foundation \u201cgenius\u201d fellow, a 2013 World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, and one of <a href=\"http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/video\/player\/0,32068,1567605638001_2112245,00.html\"><em>TIME<\/em> magazine&#8217;s 100 Most Influential People<\/a> in the World in 2012. She serves on the Board of Directors of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.momsrising.org\/\">Momsrising<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jwj.org\/\">National Jobs with Justice<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.workingamerica.org\/\">Working America<\/a>.
