The event, sanctioned by the American Culinary Federation (ACF), showcased culinary student and professional talents in three categories&#8212;cold food, hot food and pastries.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s culinary team 1 included students, <strong>Kimberly Lim<\/strong>, <strong>Qihao &ldquo;Sam&rdquo; Tan<\/strong>, <strong>Sean Uyehara<\/strong>, <strong>Jeremy David<\/strong> and <strong>Christian Rae Wong<\/strong>. Culinary team 2 included students, <strong>Kyungsuk &ldquo;Katie&rdquo; Lee<\/strong>, <strong>Keane Aranita<\/strong>, <strong>Dongsun Kim<\/strong>, <strong>Richard Lee<\/strong> and <strong>Jarred Obata<\/strong>. The instructor for both teams was Chef <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/culinary.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/faculty-directory\/\">Jason Peel<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 53 students and 7 professionals vied in this year&#8217;s competition. Competitors included participants from <a href=\"http:\/\/kauai.hawaii.edu\/\">Kaua&#699;i<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward<\/a> and <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community Colleges; Waipahu High\u00a0School and 2 branches of the military. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/11\/29\/culinary-talent-tested-at-hawaii-culinary-competition-expo\/\">&ldquo;Culinary talent tested at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Culinary Competition Expo,&rdquo;<\/a> November 29, 2016 <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Five members will be selected from <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>&#8217;s first and second place team to compete as Team <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and represent the state at the ACF Western Regional Culinary Salon Competition \u200bat Salon\u200b In Joliet, Illinois, February 3&#8211;5.<\/p>\n<h2>Competition highlights<\/h2>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> alumna Woraporn Martinez won a gold medal for her pastillage, The Temple of King Rama IV and Tiffany Tan also won a gold for her pastillage, Spirit House. The show-stopper and gold winner was <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Chef David Brown for his Christmas Centerpiece of pastillage with gingerbread overlay.<\/p>\n<p>The cold foods were eye-appealing and rich with color enhancements, like Megumi Murano&#8217;s beet-colored stuffed eggs. The hot food category were also crowd pleasers, like <strong>Christopher Corpuz<\/strong> from <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> with his macadamia nut crusted lamb with a red wine lamb reduction. <strong>Shaylyn Funasaki<\/strong>, from Leeeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, won gold with her kampachi nitsuke, chawan mushi, cha soba and miso namasu.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54067\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54067\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/kapiolani-culinaryexpo-funasaki.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"251\" class=\"size-full wp-image-54067\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/kapiolani-culinaryexpo-funasaki.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/kapiolani-culinaryexpo-funasaki-260x218.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-54067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shaylyn Funasaki, Gold Winner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the awards ceremony, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/culinary.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/faculty-directory\/#ronald_takahashi\">Ron Takahashi<\/a><\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> <a href=\"http:\/\/culinary.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\">culinary arts<\/a> chair commented that the entries were exceptional and each entry showed the dedication and artistry of participants. &ldquo;In my mind every entry is a winner,&rdquo; said Takahashi<\/p>\n<p>Judges were certified chefs from the American Culinary Federation&#8212;Stafford DeCambra, Douglas Fisher and Derek Spendlove.
