  {"id":53851,"date":"2016-12-07T09:15:31","date_gmt":"2016-12-07T19:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=53851"},"modified":"2020-03-05T15:29:34","modified_gmt":"2020-03-06T01:29:34","slug":"uh-cyber-security-team-wins-national-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/12\/07\/uh-cyber-security-team-wins-national-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> cyber security team wins national competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_53855\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53855\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/west-oahu-honolulu-cybersecurity-team.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"348\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53855\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/west-oahu-honolulu-cybersecurity-team.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/west-oahu-honolulu-cybersecurity-team-260x146.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-53855\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Advanced Technology Society team composed of <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> students.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Advanced Technology Society, a team comprised of cyber security students from University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West O&#699;ahu and Honolulu Community College, won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalcyberleague.org\/\">National Cyber League<\/a> competition&#8212;the first team from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> to win the prestigious national contest.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With more than 2,700 participants, you can imagine how talented the competition is,&rdquo; said <strong>Matthew Chapman<\/strong>, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> associate professor of information technology and cyber security. &ldquo;Providing the level of skill, dedication and teamwork required to win this competition, against the best students nationwide, is no small task.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Mentored by coaches Chapman and Honolulu Community College Professor <strong>Aaron Tanaka<\/strong>, and led by team captain Jayson Hayworth, the 10-student team competed in a &ldquo;capture-the-flag&rdquo; (CTF) event. All members on the team are <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> students or dual enrolled at Honolulu Community College in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees-and-certificates\/bachelor-of-applied-sciences\/cent\/\">Computing, Electronics and Networking Technology (CENT)<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees-and-certificates\/bachelor-of-applied-sciences\/information-security-and-assurance\/\">Information Security and Assurance<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The goal of the game is to test your skill set to see how proficient you are at completing a series of challenges,&rdquo; Hayworth said. &ldquo;Our job is to find the flags hidden within the challenge and those flags are utilized to calculate a score based on how much they are worth. &ldquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Team solved every challenge presented<\/h2>\n<p>The students spent more than 600 collective hours solving cyber-related challenges. Teams compete virtually in areas such as open source intelligence, password cracking, cryptography, scanning and recon, wireless access, log analysis, network traffic analysis, web application exploitation, and enumeration and exploitation. The team with the highest score wins after a weeklong period. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Advanced Technology Society solved every challenge presented and ended the competition with an accuracy of 94.6 percent. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Based on our experience from previous years, they made the game much harder,&rdquo; Hayworth said. &ldquo;Last year we were able to complete all challenges in less than two days, this year, it took us the entire week.
