Students from 13 universities around the world, including first-timer <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a>, will compete for $100,000 in prizes. Organizers say the best days for the public to attend are December 17 and 18, for hands on <abbr title=\"Science, Technology, Engineering and Math\">STEM<\/abbr> activities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53742\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53742\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/system-maritime-robotx-3-sm-260x146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"146\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-53742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/system-maritime-robotx-3-sm-260x146.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/system-maritime-robotx-3-sm.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-53742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa&#8217;s RobotX autonomous competition vessel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s a unique opportunity for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s students to participate in such a prestigious competition,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Engineering Assistant Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/me.hawaii.edu\/faculty\/trimble.htm\"><strong>A. Zachary Trimble<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first Maritime RobotX Challenge was held in Singapore in 2014. The competition is designed to foster student interest in autonomous robotic systems, with an emphasis on science and engineering.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>More about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robotx.org\/\">Maritime RobotX Challenge<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ics.hawaii.edu\/\">computer science<\/a> student <strong>Richard Eidswick<\/strong> noted,&ldquo;Going through the whole process of designing something, analyzing it and bringing it actually into existence has been a wonderful experience.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Student teams are required to use a common boat platform.
